The Scottish Vet Fair

Mar Lodge, Mar Lodge Estate, Braemar, Aberdeenshire AB35 5YJ

From the organisers of the Scottish Vet Fair at Crathes Castle in 2017 comes a second weekend of high quality CPD for farm, equine and small animal vets, this time at the beautiful National Trust property Mar Lodge in scenic Royal Deeside. Three parallel streams over two days offers you excellent CPD on cutting edge techniques and recent advances in clinical practice from highly qualified speakers. Pick and mix from farm animal, equine and small animal subjects. The conference is aimed at single species or mixed practice vets and also provides a valuable opportunity to network and socialise with veterinary colleagues and experts in various fields. There is time for relaxation or adventure and exploring the local area to allow you to make the most of your weekend.

Things to see and do in the area

There is the opportunity to attend a hog roast and ceilidh for an extra £35pp on Saturday evening, giving you the chance to revisit those vet student parties. Why not make the weekend an opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues in a beautiful location or extend your stay and bring your family to explore the area further.  Lying at the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, Mar Lodge Estate with its heather-covered moors, Caledonian pine forest and Quoich wetlands is home to a host of wildlife, including red squirrels, ptarmigan, otters, golden eagles and black grouse, and is committed to its conservation projects. For those wishing to enjoy the scenic beauty there are a number of walking trails starting at the Linn of Dee car park on Mar Lodge Estate, and 15 Munros are found on or within its boundaries. Guided walks can be offered by the on-site Ranger team, and there is a climb of Devils Peak arranged by Mar Lodge on Friday 13th July- call 01339 720164 for more information.

By separate arrangement, salmon, sea and brown trout fishing on the River Dee is possible, as is clay pigeon shooting. Horses are welcome on the estate. Braemar offers whisky tasting opportunities, including the Royal Lochnagar Distillery which is located adjacent to Balmoral Castle. Loch Muick offers beautiful scenery and an 8-mile walk around the loch. Glenshee is just a short drive away and the 41-mile Deeside Way runs past Crathes on its way from Aberdeen to Ballater and is a picturesque route for walking and cycling. The nearest golf courses are Braemar, the highest course in Scotland and arguably the most scenic; with Macdonald Spey Valley 1.5hours away. Crathie Kirk is the famous location used by the Royal Family for worship since Queen Victoria came in 1848 to stay at Balmoral Castle. Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the present church in 1893. The new church was completed and dedicated in 1895.  Aberdeen shopping and cosmopolitan pursuits are available 1.5hour drive away and include four shopping centres and the beach where there is also an indoor leisure pool, an amusement park, the Aberdeen Science Centre and a cinema. Mountain biking is available on the estate, and Tarland Trails is 31 miles from Braemar.  Further afield in Aberdeenshire: Castle Fraser, National Trust property, Sauchen; Royal Aberdeen Golf Course, Aberdeen; Grampian Transport Museum, Alford; Trump International Golf Links, Balmedie;
